The road surface condition monitoring system uses remote sensing technology to monitor the thickness of ice, snow, and water accumulation on the road surface non-contactly. Installation can be completed without closing roads or cutting the road surface, providing accurate monitoring data for road management departments and enabling timely warnings before safety hazards appear.
The road surface condition monitoring system is an intelligent monitoring device based on remote sensing technology, used to acquire various status information of the road surface in real time. The system is installed and operated without damaging the road structure through non-contact detection, avoiding the traffic interference and construction inconvenience caused by traditional buried sensors that require road closures and road surface cutting. The system can be installed on existing weather stations or other buildings with unobstructed views of the road surface, offering flexible installation location options.
The core monitoring capability of the road surface condition monitoring system comes from multispectral measurement technology. By emitting light of specific wavelengths and analyzing changes in the road surface reflectance spectrum, the sensor can accurately distinguish and measure the thickness of water accumulation, ice, and snow accumulation on the road surface. The measurement range for water accumulation thickness is 0 to 10 mm, while the measurement ranges for ice and snow accumulation is 0 to 2 mm. The system can also output a slipperiness index, ranging from 0.01 (slippery) to 0.82 (high friction), and report six road surface conditions: dry, damp, wet, snowy, icy, and mixed ice and water. Optional functions can monitor road surface temperature and weather phenomena such as rain, snow, and fog.
In terms of technical parameters, the road condition monitoring system has a detection distance of 2 to 8 meters, a detection area diameter of 23 centimeters, and an installation angle of 30 to 80 degrees relative to the horizontal. The device uses DC12-24V power, consumes only 0.6 watts, operates in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, and adapts to humidity levels from 0 to 95%. The system supports RS485 and RS232 communication methods and is suitable for concrete and asphalt road surfaces.
The road condition monitoring system transmits the collected data to a management platform via wired or wireless networks, providing decision-making support for road management departments. The system can provide early warning information before road safety hazards occur, helping management departments to take timely response measures. This system is suitable for various traffic scenarios, including highways, bridges and tunnels, airport runways, accident-prone areas, and regions prone to rain and snow. Its contactless design minimizes equipment maintenance and simplifies installation and upkeep, making it an ideal component of road meteorological systems.
